Workshop on Speech Processing for beginners

A workshop on Speech Processing for beginners was organized under Center for Continuing Education, Nirma University on April 8, 2017. 21 participants including students and faculty members from various institutes attended the workshop.
Dr Hemant Patil from DA-IICT, Gandhinagar gave expert talks on Feature Extraction aspects for the Speech Processing tasks. This workshop focused on introducing the fascinating field of Speech Signal Processing to novices. The theme of the workshop was specially designed for those who wanted to just begin their career in this area of research. The objective of the workshop was to deliver to the participants sufficient knowledge of physiological aspects of Speech Science and necessary signal processing background which could serve the purpose of a prerequisite course and give them a kick start to learn fundamentals of Audio and Speech Processing. Some famous applications were also discussed including a few applications such as "Speaker Verification" as case studies. The workshop received a good response from the participants and some of them showed willingness to join Speech Research Group running at the department.
Workshop on Big Data Analytics with Hadoop and Spark using Python Programing

A workshop on Big Data Analytics with Hadoop and Spark using Python Programing was organized under Center for Continuing Education, Nirma University. 25 participants including students and faculty members from various institutes and industry in Gujarat and nearby state attended the workshop.
The objective of the workshop was to introduce the concept of Big Data and recent trends in Big Data Analytics using Python based Hadoop and Apache Spark framework. The workshop emphasis was on enabling participants to effectively utilize Hadoop Ecosystem for solving Big Data related problems in their respective domains. A brief overview of Deep Learning techniques and their applicability in solving several problems was also provided. Lab sessions were conducted to demonstrate all practical aspects of using Apache Spark in Python so as to provide hands on experience to participants starting from configuration. Participants gained knowledge which helped them apply concepts and practical knowledge availed from this workshop in applications including Multimedia Processing and Recommender Systems.
Workshop on "Probability and Statistics: A Computer Engineering Perspective"
A one day workshop was arranged on April 2, 2016 on “Probability and Statistics: A Computer Engineering Perspective” for the UG and PG students of CSE background. 22 students of BTech and MTech from CSE Department participated in this workshop. The emphasis of the workshop was on demonstrating the use of Probability and Statistics concepts in real life applications such as Information Theory, Speech Processing, Machine Learning, Simulation & Modeling, Clouds and Networks etc.
The workshop was intended to fill in the gap between theory and application of Probability & Statistics which helped the participants to relate easily after attending the programme. Students were found motivated and they learned several applications of Probability and Statistics in real life which they could use to solve challenging problems in their domain of research.
